Nestled in southeastern Washington’s rolling wheat fields, Pullman has much to offer visitors, students, and those seeking a lifestyle that combines a beautiful country setting with the benefits of a major university nearby.
Pullman’s 25,000 residents are a mix of WSU students, faculty, staff and their families, individuals employed in agriculture, small industry, technology, and service businesses.
The Palouse area is a photographer’s dream, depicted in the book The Most Beautiful Place in the World, Impressions of 10 Master Photographers edited by Jay Maisel, as the “Love of Farmlands”. It is the perfect combination of topography, weather, crops and farming methods. A National Geographic cover story called region “ A Paradise Called the Palouse”.
Visit a few of Pullman’s unique shops, galleries, and boutiques, then enjoy a tour of WSU, one of the largest residential campuses west of the Mississippi. Explore WSU’s extensive campus and drink in the beautiful architecture, blending both classic and contemporary styles. Afterward, enjoy a fine meal in one of Pullman’s many restaurants – ranging from authentic Mexican to Szechwan Chinese. Of course, steak and seafood are always a Palouse favorite too.
Pullman's History
Pullman has its origins as early as 1877. It was then known as “Three Forks,” from a geographical perspective of the joining Missouri Flat Creek, Dry Fork Creek and the South Fork of the Palouse River.
In 1881, three settlers, Daniel McKenzie, Bolin Farr and Orville Steward, applied for a postal permit under the name “Pullman”. One theory is that the adopted name came from George Pullman, the king of the great railroad sleeping car. Pullman’s artesian wells soon lured newcomers to the area. The community grew with six businesses and professionals who encouraged growth and in 1890 helped bring Washington State College to Pullman. Opening in 1892 with 21 students, Washington State University has grown to almost 17,000 students at the Pullman Campus alone.
